The Role of the Volunteer

Your materials are carefully designed to support the learning objectives in the formal school curriculum and to engage and encourage student learning and participation. You are a positive role model for the students you will work with and they will gain great insights into the world of work through their time with you. They will also be encouraged to see a link between what they learn in the classroom and the working world and become better prepared for their post school lives.

Prepare well in advance of your programme delivery by:

  1. Attending your programme training.
  2. Becoming familiar with your programme and classroom materials.

Share your "story" with the students

Consider sharing a collage of some pictures from your past and present. You might include a picture from when you were their age, a key moment in your young life, a family pet, a sports team you train or play with or what your office looks like. Collateral that your organisation uses in recruiting staff or for training or marketing purposes may be usefully deployed here too as context for the current role in your career story. This will really assist in building rapport with the class and getting “buy-in” to the programme sessions.

Establish a good communication link with the teacher

Have clear and regular communication with your assigned teacher.

Update the programme delivery log on your volunteer portal

Once your programme start date is agreed you will need to update this information on your volunteer portal so that your programme resources will dispatch to your assigned school.

This will also ensure that your programme coordinator can support you on your volunteer journey.

As a volunteer, you will need to prepare well in advance for your programme delivery. What ways can you prepare in advance?

Review the learning objectives and familiarise yourself with your first session
Prepare your introduction
Attend your programme training
All of the above
